Tech Finds | Burner – Disposable Phone Numbers by Ad Hoc Labs

I've always thought that Burner Phones from the movies sounded cool.

Now you can turn your iPhone into a Burner Phone with multiple numbers by using the Burner app.

This app enables you to create multiple alias numbers for your phone that you can make and receive calls from, as well as send and receive SMS messages.

Burner Phone recommends this app for people who want to keep their real number private but need to be reachable by phone such as for:

  • Conducting Job Searches
  • Online Dating
  • Social Media Contacts

I quickly saw another use. Teachers could use the Burner Phone app to give a phone number out to parents and/or students in circumstances when educators need to share their phone numbers such as around parent/teacher conference time and during field trips.

As a former high school teacher and now as an adjunct factuly member that doesn't have an office therefore I'm not reachable by phone, this would be perfect. I give out my Google Voice number to places like Doctor's Office and service places such as the car service center, but then they always have that number. I.E. I'm also reachable by that number.

For places that I interact with only once, it's not really necessary for them to have a number that will always work and I find that more often than not they end up spamming me by phone with advertisements long after our business relationship has ended.

With a Burner Phone number, you can set up how long you want the number to work – either by minutes of voice time or number of text messages or days available – i.e. you can set up a number to work for one week.

This is definitely an app I'll consider next time I head to a conference – it would be great to give out for texting new people that I meet!
